What to do in case of an accident

PAS behavior (Protect, Alert, Help) It is internationally recognized and established for any type of initial response to an emergency. It is defined as the first actions that will first aim to provide protection at the scene, then alert emergency services, and only after this, and once we have the appropriate knowledge, will we focus our attention on helping the injured person(s).

Below we generally define PAS behavior:

P for protection:

The first and most important thing is to protect both yourself and the victims:

  1. Park your vehicle in a safe place, if possible before the accident, and off the road where it will not be in the way or cause further traffic accidents.
  2. Turn off the vehicle, apply the handbrake, and turn on the hazard lights.
  3. Before leaving the vehicle, put on your reflective vest.
  4. Grab the warning triangles and signal the traffic accident; if it's a two-way accident, keep the distance in both directions at 50 meters. If it's a one-way accident, such as on highways, keep the distance in both directions at 50 meters. If necessary, keep the distance in both directions at 150 meters.
  5. Remove the keys from the ignition of the damaged car and apply the handbrake, if circumstances allow.
  6. Avoid potential sources of ignition, for example, smoking near the accident site.
  7. Do not modify the condition of vehicles or victims, unless doing so poses a danger to traffic or the victims themselves.

To be notified:

We must be aware of the importance of being the first witness, as an essential element in efficiently activating emergency services. At the European level, it is established as a number emergency phone number 112It is very important to report the incident correctly and with as much information as possible about the location of the incident.

Be brief and concise when transmitting information. Occasionally, due to the magnitude of the accident, the lines may be overloaded. In this case, we will call the alternate numbers.

S for help:

To provide relief, it's not enough to simply be caring and have goodwill; it's also necessary to know and apply a series of skills, techniques, and abilities. Therefore, acting hastily or without knowledge of the proper techniques could worsen the victim's condition and cause irreparable consequences. If you don't know what to do, do nothing.

Before performing any rescue maneuver at the scene of an accident, it is essential to assess your own safety and that of the injured. This way, we can avoid being the rescuer who is rescued.

1. Only assist if you have basic first aid knowledge
2. If the injured motorcyclist is involved in the accident, do not remove his helmet.
3. Do not rescue people from unstable vehicles.
4. If any victim needs it, open the airway.
5. Compress bleeding wounds.
6. Do not move the victim unless you are aware of the situation, except in situations of risk due to imminent fire or explosion.
7. Loosen any tight clothing on the victim.
8. Protect victims from cold or heat.
9. Do not give the victims anything to drink or eat.
